He Clothes Us

This poem was inspired by the action done by God as Adam and Eve are being ushered away from eternity in Eden. Genesis 3:21 says, “he clothed them” (CSB). God did not have to. Righteousness says, “This wrong must be made right,” and compassion says, “I will be right here still.” This description of events following the Fall rings in my ears in moments of discouragement. As I ponder on the way God clothed His creation, I am reminded of two other passages: Luke 15 and Colossians 3.

Luke 15 tells the story of a father who lets his child walk his own away, even knowing that his decision was foolish. When the child returns home, the father runs towards his son. The father then tells his servants, “Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet” (Luke 15:22, CSB).

Colossians 3: 8-10 says, “put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator” (CSB).

I hope these scriptures and this poem about the clothing of God encourages you today.

Do you know?

God created everything

And everything He clothed with beauty

In the beginning

He created the birds

He created the sky

He created the stars

The earth, the wind, the moon

The sun, the sea

And He created mankind

But mankind was not kind to their Creator

One command He gave

One command they broke

Separating man and God

Do you know?

In one fell swoop

Everything changed

Mankind no longer felt new

No, they felt shame

They felt guilt

They wanted to hide

They couldn’t stay

They were naked

They knew it

They said goodbye

But God

Clothed them

Do you know?

Time and time again

God’s people chose their sin

Over Him

The divide gets bigger

The debt gets heavier

The despair grows deeper

Who will save them?

Who will save us?

Who is worthy?

Do you know?

Have you heard?

In the beginning

Was the Word

The Word was God

The Word was with God

Through Him all was created

Through Him

All would be made new

Do you know?

If He dresses the lilies

If He dresses the birds

The sparrows

In beauty

In splendor

How much more does He love you?

How much more does He hear you?

How much more will He clothe you?

Do you know?

He fulfills that command

We broke

Not just the first

But all

Once for all

Once crowned a crown of thorns

Once mocked as king of the Jews

Forever robed in majesty

Forever the Risen King of me and You

Do you know?

He clothes us

In righteousness

In newness

In His light

In love

In joy

Peace, patient, kindness

Goodness, faithfulness,

Gentleness, self-control,

Do you know?

He will stand before us

Clothed in white

The earth will fade away

Time will fade away

All He created will fade away

But mankind and God

He will wipe away every tear

Sooth every sorrow

We don’t know when

But we do know Who

Who is this?

This is Jesus.

Do you know Him?

He created you

He knows you

He died for you

He rose for you

He gets you

He clothes you

He chose you
